September 29, 2004 -- Trailblazer International Program 2004

The 2004 Trailblazer International (TBI) Program in Vancouver – Canada in July 2004 was a huge success!

In total 12 students ( age 15 – 19) from Italy, Belgium, Mexico, Japan, Canada and the United States completed the month long program that centered on leadership, teamwork, communication and a variety of outdoor skills.

Students participated in a multitude of activities both in and out of the classroom. The classroom was always full of energy where students gained knowledge and practice in leadership, orienteering, first aid, public speaking and team building. Once the students were outside many activities tested all of the students' skills acquired inside the classroom. One of the highlights of the outdoor activities included an afternoon of kayaking on lovely Bowen Island. Another challenging but exciting day was on Vancouver's Grouse Mountain. Students worked hard hiking up the Grouse Grind and then enjoyed several hours at the top of the mountain watching the Lumberjack Show and viewing some of the wildlife including the grizzly bears and wolves.

However, the Trailblazers greatest challenge was safely completing a 50 km, 5- day backpacking trip in the spectacular Garibaldi Park. As one of the Trailblazers said, "This was the toughest thing I have ever done, but I did it".

The final days of the program included the students going to the "Festival of Fireworks" at English Bay, participating in KGIC's annual Sports Day at Trout Lake Park, and the presentation of completion certificates.

The TBI of the Year award went to Shingo Sato from Japan. Overall it was an amazing month full of lots of activities, ongoing successes and challenges, and everlasting memories and friendships.
